Most people think that we Lawyers have all the answers.
That may be true when it comes to "the Law," but may not be true when it comes to PERSONAL issues relating to ourselves.
We like to give others the impression that "things are wonderful," and "we are on top of everything, or, that "we have it handled" - - when, in truth, that is not the case. We are oftentimes too "Macho" to admit otherwise, even to ourselves.
So, what do we do? We "STUFF IT" ! We stuff within ourselves those things that we seem to be unable to handle or resolve.
There are many (too many) Lawyers whose systematic way of functioning is to not speak about personal issues and emotions. In such individuals, when there is an unresolved personal issue, one "shuts down" or "stuffs it."
If you are not familiar with the latter-mentioned term ("stuffing it"), that has to do with keeping one's thoughts and feelings to oneself so as not to expose one's vulnerability to others. This type of individual places value on silence about anything that might be deemed personal or controversial. Such a person works hard to protect their image. However, this often comes at a great cost to the "Stuffor."
Numerous medical research has shown that the mind and body are not separate. Stress, anger, aggravation, and other such factors profoundly affect the way we feel. Consequently, the immune system is affected, making us more vulnerable to physical and mental illnesses. Constant anger and conflict can lead to high blood pressure, strokes, heat attaches, and even diabetes.
In these current difficult economic times, Lawyers are confronting issues previously seldom seen. The question is, "How are they (how are we) handling these issues? Are they "stuffing" them, or are they "addressing" them?
Just think about it for a moment.
How are YOU handling YOUR personal issues, these days?
