I read a story recently that reminded me of some lawyers I meet. They are so narrowly focused on the problem at hand that they miss the broader opportunity that is presented to them or their client.
The story: It was Joe Markham's problem. Markham kept hearing the sounds "crunch," "crunch" coming from his 3-year old mutt "Fritz" that he had adopted. It seems that Fritz loved chewing rocks - - so much so, in fact, that Fritz was breaking and losing his teeth. In every other way, Fritz was a wonderful and loving companion.
But Markham knew that the dog's one bad habit was endangering his health. So Markham, an owner of a motorcycle shop, encouraged Fritz to try softer substitutes - - radiator hoses and motorcycle tires. But Fritz didn't favor either of these items enough for them to become a rock replacement.
One day, Fritz stretched under the workbench, pulled out a part from a car, and trotted over to Markham where Fritz dropped the part on Markham's foot. This rubber-knobbed gizmo was a prize - - and it was love at first bite for Fritz. Fritz forgot his beloved rocks.
That's when Markham speculated that if his dog loved this type of rubber so much, other dogs would, too. And so began a long journey of prototypes, rejections, manufactured woes, ridicule and late-night commercial slots. But Markham persevered because he know that his REAL customers - - the furry, 4-legged ones - - would prove him right.
Today, Markham's toy "the Kong" is nearing the 50 million mark - - almost one for every dog in America. Markham says that while perseverance played a role in his success, the real secret was that he stayed focused on find a solution to a problem.
Lawyers oftentimes hear the annoying (sometimes "crunchy") sound of a problem approaching and, when they do, try to avoid or sidestep the problem. Instead, they should be listening for the sound of "opportunity knocking."
I often tell Lawyers, "When opportunity knocks, answer the door !"
